The intersection of Smith and Riverview roads in the Merriman Valley is about to get a (Hopefully bike friendly) makeover!
The popular and busy intersection of Smith and Riverview roads in the Merriman Valley area of West Akron is about to get a makeover.
Design Engineer for the City of Akron, Mike Teodecki says this will make the intersection safer and more modern.
"Our proposal will be for a state-of-the-art traffic roundabout to replace the existing signal-controlled intersection. I think motorists will find this configuration much more to their liking."
Construction work is anticipated to begin Spring 2011.
The project involves the improvement of the intersection by removing the existing pavement; grading; constructing a modern roundabout consisting of asphalt concrete pavement, splitter islands, and a center island; reconstructing storm sewers; removing existing traffic signal equipment; applying pavement markings; installing traffic signs; and relocating utilities.
Sidewalks and a crosswalk will be installed across the south approach of Riverview Road to accommodate pedestrian access to the Ohio & Erie Canal Towpath Trail and Buckeye Trail.
During construction, which is expected to last four months, Riverview Road will be closed north of Smith Road.
This project will be funded in part using ODOT Highway Safety Program funds.
